Auschwitz – the scene of one of the worst crimes in human history, where over a million people were killed by the Nazis during World War II. The Salt Mine in Wieliczka is a world-class landmark visited by more than 1 million tourists every year.
Auschwitz has become a primary symbol of the Holocaust. It was a network of concentration and extermination camps built and operated by the Third Reich in Polish areas annexed by Nazi Germany during World War II. It is a proof of cruel terror and unimaginable genocide.
Original fences, wooden watchtowers and railway ramps have been preserved. The museum exhibition contains original documents, suitcases, shoes and other belongings of murdered prisoners. The visit also includes a short ride to Birkenau camp, which functioned as a war camp, extermination camp and place from which people were sent to labour in Nazi Germany. More than 90 percent of prisoners, mostly Jews, were killed there. Birkenau was mainly destroyed by the retreating Germans.
Wieliczka Salt Mine – You will have an opportunity to discover the extraordinary history of the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Every year more than 1 million tourists visit the mine – not without a reason. It was built in the 13th century and produced table salt continuously until 1996. The mine reaches a depth of 327 meters. It is so deep that it would easily fit the Eiffel Tower. Under the ground level you will find saline corridors, salt sculptures and statues, spectacular timber constructions, saline lakes and magnificent chambers chiselled out in rock salt.
During the guided tour you will experience the alluring mistery of the mine and listen to all the legends and secrets hidden underground for centuries. You will hear one of the most fascinating Polish legends inside the Chapel of St. Kinga. She was a princess who is known for bringing precious salt to Polish land. You will also see the only underground church in Europe! Wieliczka Salt Mine is a ‘must’ when you visit Poland!
